about
Glenn Jones has penned and performed the perfect song in tribute to his dearly departed brother Davy Jones - the legendary Austin-based guitarist who passed away in 2015 and played with acts including The Ideals, The Next, The Hickoids, The Dicks, The Diamond Smugglers, Bigfoot Chester and many, many more.
Not only is this tune the maiden release of the newly launched Saustex Records lathe-cut imprint Wacky Souvenir but is also meant to build excitement surrounding the forthcoming anthology of Davy's work 'Boot Legs'...stay tuned.
lyrics
In the burning sands of the great Southwest
Somewhere down the Austin Texas way
Lives a guy we love, cuz he’s the very best
That crazy Hickoid cat named Davy J
No tats, no piercings, no braided beard
Yet he has got a certain style for sure
A one-man campaign to keep Austin weird
His freak flag don’t fly, it soars
From his dayglo hat to his dayglo boots
To his red plaid wide-lapel vintage suits
A true original to his roots
You won’t find him working for The Man
He only wants to laugh and sing and play
One crazy mother, he’s like no other
He’s my brother, he’s ol’ Davy J
Davy’d give his last two bucks of cash
If a friend of his was in need
And if a band is stuck, they got a place to crash
And never one to bogart any weed
Now decades before there was a thing called Wiki
Davy was the perfect answer man
No pop culture question was ever too tricky
Gets it faster than a search engine can
He knows the discography of Bobby Blue Bland
Everyone who plays in Johnny Thunders’ band
The plot to every single Gilligan’s Island
You won’t find him working for The Man
He only wants to laugh and sing and play
One crazy mother, he’s like no other
That’s my brother, that’s ol’ Davy J
A proud survivor of the hippy era
Of his core convictions he is proud
He’s a little to the left of Che Guevera
Not always right, but he is always loud
The great-granddaddy of Austin punk
He cranks that Marshall till your ears bleed
He’s full of fire and he’s full of funk
Both power chords and screaming gonzo leads
He kicked ass with Richard Hays in The Ideals
If he’s jamming with The Dicks, them cats is for real
And if the Hickoids are in town, you’re in luck
(help ‘em out, sing) “Back in the truck! Back in the truck!”
You won’t find him working for The Man
He only wants to laugh and sing and play
One crazy mother, he’s like no other
He’s my brother, that’s ol’ Davy J

I recommend ALL of the Saustex samplers for ANYONE intrigued by ANY of the artists included - the FIRST sampler was only the SECOND Saustex CD that I bought... and I've searched out many more to add to my music collection! - Robert Scott rdscott450

I'm currently mourning my missing the 2021 Austin Corn Lovers Fiesta. With that in mind, I was very happy to get the latest Saustex sampler! From acts that I'm not familiar with to unreleased songs by Saustex stalwarts, this has got the cure for what ails ya! - Robert Scott rdscott450

I've been listening to this recording almost nonstop since receiving it. After reading the liner notes from Jeff Smith, I was stunned to find out that this was such a recent release.
The music sounds so classic and timeless, I couldn't believe that it had just been released this year! I've heard many of the songs before, and enjoyed seeing The Hickoids before - and this is a beautiful time capsule.
If you like any of the songs, or the artists, or rock & roll, check it out! - Robert Scott rdscott450
